Saab: From aircraft construction to the automobile

Saab AB was originally founded as an aircraft manufacturing and defence industry group: Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget ("Saab" for short) was established in 1937. Due to the extensive prior knowledge, the special focus was on optimal aerodynamics as well as technical innovation. Thus the first prototype, the "Ursaab" 92, was completed in June 1947, making it the first automobile in history to be equipped with side impact protection.

Swedish-Italian cooperation and innovation

Together with the Italian luxury car manufacturer Lancia, Saab developed and marketed several car models, including the Lancia Delta as the Saab 600 and the Lancia Thema as the Saab 9000. The cooperation was a good fit, as both manufacturers produced vehicles in the upper middle and luxury classes that were also designed to be technically innovative and forward-looking.

In addition to side impact protection, Saab developed the pollen filter, direct ignition, active headrests and turbo engines. With the 99 Turbo model, the first turbocharged vehicle thus went into series production in 1978.
