Lada: best off the tarmac

It all began in 1969 with the construction of the Volga automobile plant AwtoWAS in Tolyatti, Russia. The client was the car manufacturer Fiat, which had its first vehicles produced here from 1971. The first car of the newly-born Russian car manufacturer was a replica of the successful Fiat 124 and was initially called WAZ-2101. In Eastern Europe, the vehicle was given the nickname "Shiguli", the name of a mountain range near Tolyatti.

From 1974, the brand name Lada (Slavic for "beloved") was used for export vehicles of the manufacturer AwtoWAS. The best-known variant of the first model is the Lada Niva. The off-road vehicle has been delighting its fans for over 40 years and thus looks back on the longest production history among off-road vehicles. The Niva has even surpassed the Land Rover Defender and the Mercedes G-Class.
