The car manufacturer Daewoo Motors was originally founded in 1937 as National Motors in South Korea and later produced the then successful Datsun Bluebird under the name Saenara Motors. A joint venture with General Motors followed in 1972, and ten years later the Daewoo Group took over, giving the brand its final name.

From then until the mid-1990s, production of vehicles based mainly on GM models began. Since 2005, General Motors has held the largest share in GM Daewoo Auto and Technology (GM DAT).
